Difference Between Humulin N & Novolin N Insulin

For diabetics and those dealing with insulin the differences between insulin products and types can be confusing. The two insulins Humulin N and Novolin N are very similar except for their action rates.
  1. Function

    • Humulin N and Novolin N are both designed to be used by insulin-dependent diabetics as a medium-acting insulin in combination with a fast-acting insulin.

    Action Rates

    • Humulin N and Novolin N have a peak action rate of four to 12 hours after injection, depending on the patient and the dose. The main difference between the two is that Humulin has a longer-acting time of up to 24 hours, while Novolin tends to be effective up to 12 hours.

    Appearance

    • Humulin N and Novolin N insulin are essentially the same type of insulin, which is called NPH, or human insulin isophane suspension. This suspension is called a crystalline suspension and takes on a cloudy or milky appearance, and it must be mixed before injection.

    Origin

    • Both Humulin N and Novolin N insulin are of the rDNA origin, which means they are from recombinant DNA. This form of DNA is artificial and is not natural. This rDNA is manufactured to mimic real DNA.

    Source

    • Humulin N and Novolin N are both products of Eli Lilly and Co. They are branded as Lilly Human Insulin products under the category of intermediate-acting insulin.
