EK THA TIGER - Theatrical Trailer - Salman Khan & Katrina Kaif - Releasing 15th August 2012

The 'Tampon King' who sparked a period of change for India's women

He was cast out by his fellow villagers, who believed he had gone mad, but now, Arunachalam Muruganantham is pioneering a positive change in women's health.

When Arunachalam Muruganantham spotted his wife gathering dirty rags in their home one day he asked her what they were for. If he was shocked by her reluctant response – that she was using them for her monthly period – he was even more taken back by her reply when he asked why she was not buying sanitary napkins in the shop. "If I buy sanitary napkins," she had told him. "It means I cannot afford to buy milk for the family."

The conversation spurred Mr Muruganantham into a frenzy of invention to try and produce an affordable napkin for women such as his wife. Such was his dedication, bordering on obsession, that he once wore a football bladder of animal blood to trial a prototype. He was forced from his home by villagers who thought his methods had become too perverse after he started collecting used napkins from medical students and storing them in his home. He was even abandoned – albeit temporarily – by his wife and mother, who believed he had gone mad.
But 14 years later, the 49-year-old, who never finished school, has few regrets. His award-winning napkins are being produced on simple machines by groups across rural India and helping to revolutionise women's health.
And now, the man who has been dubbed the "Tampon King" says he is in discussion with several African countries about replicating his model.
"Rwanda, Nigeria, South Africa – I am talking with these countries," said Mr Muruganantham, speaking from Coimbatore in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu Kerala. "Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan… They want to know about it."
One workshop in India is operated in a shed in the Pardada Pardadi Inter-College, a forward-thinking girls' school run by an NGO in the town of Anupshahr, next to the Ganges river in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Here, Rama Devi, spends the first week of every month with six local women in the top-floor workshop, using simple hand-operated machines and following the five-step system that produces the sanitary napkins sold and distributed under the label Laadli, or "Beloved Daughter".
The remainder of the month she travels to villages, meeting young women, educating them about basic health issues and selling the products.
On a recent morning, The Independent accompanied Ms Devi, a single mother with four daughters, and the family's sole earner, to the village of Dungra Jogi.
Shaded from the sun beneath a large archway, one of them, 25-year-old Umar Parthak, said of the napkins: "We feel a lot more freedom. It gives us a lot more freedom to go out. Also, the rags that we previously used were not hygienic."
Her cousin, Sapna Sharma, who is studying sociology at a nearby college and who wishes to eventually train as a teacher, said women's education was improving, slowly. "As a result people are becoming aware of these products," she added.
In some parts of rural India, as in many places in the developing world, the issue of women's menstruation is a matter still associated with taboo and discrimination. In some communities, women are still considered "unclean" during menstruation and are forbidden from entering the kitchen.
Professor Ritu Priya Mehrotra, of the social medicine department of Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, said women had traditionally used old cotton for menstrual hygiene. But a shift from cotton to synthetic saris meant many were now using man-made fibre, which was unhealthy and could not be sanitised in the same way. Previously women used sand or even mud.
The development of the napkin had involved huge amounts of trial and error, and one of the biggest challenges was discovering the raw material. Mr Muruganantham had assumed they were based on cotton but an early prototype by his tolerant wife was unsuccessful.
Eventually, having taught himself English, he simply rang up the switchboard of a US-based multinational and asked to know what raw materials he would need. The crucial ingredient was wood pulp.
In 2005, his seven years of effort was recognised when he was handed a National Innovation Foundation award by President Pratibha Patil. He then quickly patented his machine, which costs between £850 and £3,400 and is capable of producing 120 pads an hour. While companies such as Procter & Gamble produce napkins that sell for up to 30 rupees (33p) a packet, his are sold for as little as 10 rupees.
The model is deliberately low-tech and decentralised, providing employment opportunities for women in remote parts of India. "The benefit of the local production model means that women can form co-operatives and generate some income as well. It is circular," Prof Mehrotra said.
As part of a broader programme to try to educate women about health issues, the Indian authorities announced last year they would start distributing subsidised napkins. The move, which is part of the so-called National Rural Health Mission, emphasised that use of such napkins could reduce reproductive tract infections that posed a grave threat to women.
Making them available in schools and colleges, such as the Pardada Pardadi Inter-College, also encourages young girls to keep up their attendance. Ms Devi, who started working in the school kitchen before graduating to the napkin production unit, said: "I am trying to change the way the women think."
Mr Muruganantham was disappointed the Indian government did not decide to support his low-cost machine as part of its national programme, but is pleased that foreign countries may soon benefit from it. He said: "What I am trying to do is develop a low-cost model across the globe."

Palestinians anger Israel over Unesco role in Bethlehem

Unesco's World Heritage committee has approved a Palestinian bid to place the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on its list of sites of World Heritage in Danger – a move seen by some nations as dangerously mixing politics and culture.
Palestinian spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi said the vote was an affirmation of Palestinian sovereignty over the site that marks the place where Christians believe Jesus was born.
Israel angrily denounced the vote, with foreign ministry spokeswoman Ilana Stein saying the decision "has turned Unesco into a theatre of the absurd".
The 21-member committee, meeting in St Petersburg, Russia, voted 13-6 to include the church and pilgrimage route, located in the Israeli-controlled West Bank, on its list of sites. There were two abstentions.
The drive to get the Nativity church quickly recognised as a World Heritage site was part of the Palestinians' effort to win international recognition since attempts to establish a Palestinian state through negotiations with Israel are frozen.
The United States was among nations opposed to the Palestinian proposal of an emergency candidacy for the Christian site, shortcutting what is usually an 18-month-long process to apply for World Heritage recognition. The US ambassador to Unesco, David Killion, said the United States is "profoundly disappointed".

Why you shouldn't save passwords

And it's got nothing to do with hackers.....

For their convenience, password managers such as LastPass and Keepass are very useful. You can use secure passwords and not have to worry about getting locked out when by getting them wrong. There is a cost to this, which is that you'll be lost if you find yourself on a strange computer. I've found that I've been able to learn even some fairly complicated passwords by entering them by hand day after day.
And it doesn't just apply to passwords, what about mobile phone numbers? Jerome K Jerome wrote that it was a rare man who could remember what his wife was wearing the day before but how many of us can remember the mobile numbers of our significant others?
Ever since I was unable to contact my wife because her number was in a phone with a dead battery and non standard charger, I've entered it by hand. Granted I only do this with her number but it does at least mean that I don't have to rely on a battery to contact her. Well apart from the time I got her number wrong as I was about to get into a taxi in Berlin at 11.30pm but the less said about that the better.
So I'm not suggesting that you try and learn every password, just the essentials. You might thank me if your battery runs out.

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes’ $275 Million Divorce Battle: Why Katie Could Get ‘Screwed’

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are about to have a divorce battle!HollywoodLife.com spoke to Vikki Ziegler, a top New York divorce attorney, who tells us that the couple who have a combined worth of $275 million are about to embark on a messy divorce.
Katie and Tom reportedly signed a prenup when they were married in 2006. According to reports, Katie will make $3 million for each year they were married — that’s $15 million. But Vikki tellsHollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that a more reasonable settlement for Katie would be 10 percent of their combined net worth, which would amount to $27 million.
“There will be some type of alimony or pay out of the assets,” Vikki tells us. “Katie could get a buyout of her portion from the assets or Tom will give her a payout. Generally speaking, celebrities have a clause for every year they are married. Even if she signed a prenup, she can say now that she was forced, or that it was unfair and try to fight it. She should fight it because’s she’s getting screwed if it’s just three million per year.”
But Divorce Court‘s Judge Lynn Toler thinks that $15 million is more than enough for Katie:
“I think $15 million is a reasonable amount for a few reasons,” she tells us. “She has her own career, so she has a means by which to maintain her lifestyle. It won’t be as good as it is with Tom though. $15 million plus child support will be significant because it will take into account the lifestyle of Suri.”
But Vikki reveals that the main way Katie can get the most money is by using her six-year-old daughter Suri’s lifestyle to her advantage!
“Most of the estate is Tom’s,” Vikki says. “She’ll have to go for a lot of child support.  She’ll have to show that Suri has nannies, cars, activities, clothes, hair appointments. That a hefty amount each month is needed to maintain Suri’s lifestyle.”
Another huge roadblock for Katie could be that since Suri was born before the couple were married in 2006, this means Tom and Katie may have a custody provision in their prenup. That means Tom might already have been granted sole custody and they might fight over custody and child support.
“Katie’s position to get full custody could be that Suri is with her all the time and obviously Tom is always working all the time,” Vikki tell us. “Katie will ask the court to have all decision making power over her.”

Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher's Romantic Dinner Date

Making it harder to believe there is no relationship in the works, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis were spotted leaving Giorgio Baldi's in Santa Monica, CA on Saturday evening (June 23).
The pair, who continuously deny any romantic link, appeared to be enjoying a private dinner date as the "Friends with Benefits" star looked sexy in a strapless black dress with a high slit as the two made their way swiftly out the back exit of the famous restaurant.
After making it out the door with the help of a staff member, the shutterbugs were eagerly waiting outside as they caught the two getting into a vehicle where they both attempted to hide in the back seat.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, both of the former "That 70's Show" co-star's vehicles have been spotted overnight at each others houses, but both continue to deny any relationship rumors.

How To Make Paella

Paella recipe. This traditional Spanish dish of seafood, chicken, rice and spices can now become a treat in your own home with this easy to follow recipe. Our Paella recipe is simply delicious!

At a glance

Preparation Time:
15 minutes
Cooking Time:
1 hour
Total Time:
1 hour 15 minutes
Oven Temperature:
360° f  -  180° c

Step 1: You will need:

  • 1 1/3 fl oz olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 red pepper, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 3/4 oz Spanish chorizo sausage, diced
  • 2 boneless chicken thighs, cut in cubes
  • 10 2/3 oz short grained rice
  • 4 1/4 fl oz white wine
  • 30 fl oz chicken stock
  • 1 tsp saffron threads
  • 3 1/2 oz peas
  • 8 large prawns, peeled and head still on
  • 2 squid, cut into rings
  • 7 oz clams
  • 1 1/2 tsp paprika
  • salt and pepper
  • lemon wedges
  • 1 30cm paella pan
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 sheet of aluminium foil

Step 2: Begin the paella

Put the paella pan over a medium to high heat. Once it has heated up add some of the oil and then the chicken pieces. Season with salt and pepper. Fry for a few minutes, stirring occasionally to help even cooking. Add the chorizo and stir in. Let it cook for a minute. Add the onions and mix them in. Add the red pepper, garlic, tomato and then the rice, stirring them all in well. Add the wine, saffron and the paprika. Mix it all together. Add enough of the hot chicken stock to cover all the ingredients. Bring it to a bubbling simmer. Lower the heat slightly, so that it cooks whilst still gently bubbling. Cook for 7-10 minutes until most of the liquid has been absorbed, but not all.

Step 3: Add the seafood

Add the clams, pushing them under the surface with your hands, to ensure that they cook. Lay the prawns around the pan, then the squid. Sprinkle the peas over and season with salt and pepper. Cover the pan with foil. Let it cook for 3-5 minutes more. Turn off the heat. Let it stand for a further 5 minutes, still covered with the foil.

Step 4: Serve

Remove the foil. Heap a generous portion onto a serving plate. Garnish with some lemon wedges and your paella is ready to serve. It goes well with fresh bread and a glass of wine.

’90210′ Season 5: Jessica Stroup Says Teddy Will Be Back — But Will Dixon?

Jessica gives HollywoodLife.com the scoop on all things season five — including who SHE thinks Silver should be with!

Jessica Stroup is a busy girl these days. Along with promoting her upcoming movieTed — she hints that her character has an underlying crush on the titular bear — she’s also embarking on a new partnership with AXE Hair. But her hectic schedule pales in comparison to the whirlwind life of her 90210 persona Silver, and Jessica was happy to give HollywoodLife.com the scoop on what’s to come in season five.
Which guy will she choose? How will getting pregnant change her life? And which former 90210-er does she want back? Read on, my friends.
What was your reaction when you found out Teddy was coming back to knock up Silver?
I didn’t even know for a long time. They didn’t tell us. I guess the producers and the showrunners don’t trust us to keep stories out of the press. They wouldn’t tell me who it was going to be, but when they did, I was thrilled. [Trevor Donovan is] one of the coolest guys I’ve gotten to work with, so the fact that he’s coming back next year is really exciting. I’m happy about that.
And can you tell me about those on-set pictures of you with the fake baby belly that leaked online? Were you aware that happened?
[Laughs.] Yeah, but I wasn’t wearing a fake baby belly! Let me tell you, I was wearing a skirt as a dress and it pooched out in the stomach. These freakin’ pictures, everybody was like, ‘[Silver's] pregnant!’ But no, it was just a bad skirt. And the wind.
So, you weren’t trying to throw people off?
Nope. Just a really bad wind day.
Baby aside, Silver gets a lot of flack from viewers for sort of “making the rounds” in the group. Is it unfair to judge her for that?
Silver has taken the rounds. I think when you’ve got a group of friends — and this happens in high schools and in groups of friends everywhere — it becomes a little incestuous, because you all love each other so much. So I don’t know if I judge her. You love who you love, you fall for who you fall for, and you enjoy life as much as you can. I think that’s exactly what Silver is doing. And that’s what she she’s definitely going to be doing next year. She’ll be acting out and trying to live life.
How much have they told you about season five?
I don’t know any specifics at all, really. I know Teddy is going to be back and we’re going to pick up right where we left off. It’s going to be a direct cut, kind of thing.
So the Navid/Liam debate will continue, or is she done with those boys?
She’s never done with those boys. I’ve got a preference as myself, but I’m not going to tell you. I think they’re going to try to work out the Silver/Navid situation, because I think the fans really like Silver with Navid.
Plus, they really want Liam with Annie. ‘Lannie’ fans are determined.
They are! I had no idea. I think Silver should get back with Dixon. That’s my choice.
Ah, so he lives?
…I didn’t say that.
[NOTE: We've heard from a very reliable source — not Jessica — that Dixon does, in fact, survive his car crash.]
Well, regardless of whether or not he lives, how do you think his accident will affect Silver?
I think right now is when she sees life is short. She lost her mother, she lost her aunt, and now that her friend is possibly going to die, all of her energy is focused on living as much as she can right now. … It’s going to bring her closer to everybody.
90210 has lost quite a few characters over the years — sometimes suddenly. Who would you love to have back on the show?
I would love to see Ethan again. I would love to see Dustin Milligan from the first season, who’s a great friend still. That was the most shocking, the most abrupt ending. His character was so important to us that we all, as a cast, tried to convince the writers to figure out a way to bring him back. That would be my choice.
Lastly, since you are partnered with AXE Hair, which of your male cast mates has the best hair?
I’m going to have to say Michael Steger. He’s had long hair, he’s cut it short. He just has a big, thick head of hair and it looks good on that face. … Matt Lanter‘s got a pretty face, but his hair could be better.

Stanford jailed for 110 years

Allen Stanford, the disgraced Texan financier who came to embody English cricket's most embarrassing alliance, has been sentenced to 110 years in jail for one of the biggest frauds in history.
Stanford was hailed as cricket's American sugar daddy when he bankrolled an international cricket tournament in Antigua that promised to transform cricket finances in England and West Indies and, in the eyes of ECB executives, provide a rival to the burgeoning Indian Premier League.
But his financial empire collapsed under an investigation by United States regulators. Since his arrest in 2009, he has spent three years in jail after he was denied bail. He was convicted in March on 13 of 14 charges against him as he was found guilty of defrauding investors of more than $7 billion (£4.5 billion).
Stanford, whose trial was delayed on health grounds after he was beaten up by prison inmates, has always denied his guilt and told the District Judge David Hittner at his sentencing hearing: "I did not defraud anybody".
Stanford's statement lasted around 40 minutes as he stuck to his claim that he did not run a Ponzi scheme - a fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to its investors from their own money or the money paid by subsequent investors, rather than from profit earned by the individual or organization - and that his financial affairs only collapsed once investigations into his affairs became known.
He told the judge: "I'm not here to ask for sympathy or forgiveness or to throw myself at your mercy. I did not run a Ponzi scheme. I didn't defraud anybody."
Prosecutors had asked for a 230-year sentence, with defence lawyers arguing for a lenient term of 44 months. It was all a world away from the night in 2008 that England and West Indies fought out a Twenty20 match in Antigua for a winner-takes-all prize of £20m. Stanford socialised in a touchy-feely fashion with England players' wives, waved to the crowds, entered the dressing rooms at will, and finished the night with what was virtually an impromptu cabaret.
The deal had been publicised in ostentatious style as Stanford was allowed to land his private helicopter on the outfield at Lord's, after which he presented a Perspex box filled with $20 million in prize money in front of smiling ECB officials.
Stanford signed a five year deal with the ECB worth $100 million in total, an episode from which some believe English cricket has never entirely recovered. But financial experts have repeatedly suggested that his real victims are the investors, whose estimates suggest have received back about 5% of their investment. Cricket, presenting itself as victims in a highly-complex case, has not returned a penny.
In Antigua, where financial regulation was relatively lax, Stanford had a private terminal at the airport, was one of its biggest employers on the island and was said to be worth more than Antigua's GDP. He was knighted in 2006 but after the extent of his fraud was revealed he was stripped of the title.

The 23-year-old South African supermodel looked as hot as can be in a range of ensembles including her birthday suit for the Mariano Vivanco shot spread while dishing about her career, role models and future goals.
On some of her favorite childhood memories:
"I grew up on a farm so every day was an adventure. Sheering the sheep, milking the cows and swimming in the lakes was part of everyday life. I used to follow my dad, brother and cousins around the farm trying my best to be one of the boys. We used to build forts, go crab fishing and get into all sorts of mischief. It all seems like it was something I dreamt up one night."
On the most challenging part of her career as a model:
"Staying motivated no matter how hard it gets is difficult. I have learned so much about myself in this journey, and I am one tough cookie - let me tell you."
On her icons/role models:
"Gisele Bündchen has always been an inspiration and role model as a person and as a business woman. LaetitiaCasta for her natural beauty. I tend to look up to older icons like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Karen Mulder..."
On her future goals when it comes to her career:
"I have reached and exceeded all of the goals I had set professionally. I hope to keep working with people who inspire me and who are inspired by me. As long as I’m always challenged I will be happy."
