How to Clear Acne at Home

Convenience store shelves are lined with products that make outrageous claims about clearing up your skin, but sometimes the best remedies are right at home in your fridge and pantry. Natural skin care solutions are great for those with sensitive skin, or those who are worried about absorbing chemicals into their bodies. So get ready to open your fridge and see what miracles you can work on your acne.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Grapes
  • 1 tbsp. gram flour
  • Milk
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 fresh garlic clove
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • Saffron
  • Multivitamin
  • Wheatgrass juice

Cleanse. Cut open two or three grapes and rub the flesh on your skin. For a thicker cleanser mix one tbsp. gram flour with milk (for dry skin) or water (for oily skin) until it becomes a paste, then rub gently on your face and rinse thoroughly. Gentle cleansers are better for acne-prone skin than commercial cleansers, since some store-bought cleansers can dry out the skin and strip it of the oils it needs to stay supple. Don't wash more than twice a day, says the website KidsHealth, since over-washing can dry out your skin and trigger breakouts.

Exfoliate gently to clear away dead skin cells. "Gentle" is the key, since harsh scrubs can aggravate acne and cut your skin. Instead, try one tsp. baking soda mixed with two tsp. water. Massage the mixture gently into your skin, let it sit until it dries, then wash it completely off with warm water. Stay away from natural remedies that involve nut shells or other large grainy substances; these will rip your skin.

Treat your blemishes individually. While benzoyl peroxide products are still a foolproof blemish zapper for all skin types, some people swear by other home remedies. For example, clinical cosmetologist Dr. Kavita Payyar recommends rubbing fresh crushed garlic on acne and washing off after 10 minutes. This disinfects the skin and can clear up pimples.

Reduce redness with an egg, honey and saffron mask. Mix the white of one egg, a pinch of powdered saffron and one tsp. honey until the saffron melts away. Apply it gently to your face and wear it until your skin tingles, then rinse completely with water. Not only does this mask feel refreshing, but it helps reduce sunburn and even out your skin tones.

Be as conscious about what you put in your body as you are about what you put on it. Drinking plenty of water, eating a variety of foods (especially fruits and veggies) and taking multivitamins all contribute to a healthy complexion. Dr. Kavita Payyar also recommends drinking 10 to 20 ounces of pure wheatgrass juice at night to reduce acne. Do this three times a week for two weeks to see some major improvement.
