The old adage that the best camera is the one you have on you isn't always technically true. Much as we love smartphones, your shaky sepia-tinged snapshots of your pets or last night's dinner might be suitable for posting on Pinterest but they hardly show off the new iPad's Retina display. Nikon's new D3200 on the other hand comes with the third generation of the camera maker's "Guide" mode, which gives you feedback on lighting and composition. The 24.2MP, 4 frame per second machine also offers helpful smart subject-tracking autofocus for shooting 1080P video. If you still want to use it to shoot "my cat sleeping in the wackiest places", that's up to you.
D3200 body only from £559.99. nikon.com
